Fresh from their hard-earned wins at the 2023 Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games, six Legazpi Thomasians and their clinging medals, together with their coaches and sports director, presented themselves through a courtesy call to UST-Legazpi’s 9th Rector and President, Rev. Fr. Edwin A. Lao, OP, DBA last July 24, 2023.
The Rector and President warmly welcomed the athletes and coaching staff for bringing a new set of accolades to the university.
Marie Veronique D. Berdin, MAEd, Director of the Center for Sports, Wellness, Culture and the Arts (CSWCA) immediately expressed the team’s gratefulness to the university’s administration for extending support to the institution’s representatives.
Looking back, the team took home five medals from the national games held last July 13-19, 2023 in Zamboanga City.
The gold medals came from Patrisha Pante in the Athletics Girls Long Jump and Sean Emmett Yap in the 200 meters freestyle relay.
Bronze medals were added by Sheina Mae Quiambao in the Badminton Collegiate Mixed Doubles, Sean Emmett Yap in the 4×200 medley relay swimming, and Helen Nicole Bertes, Jannine Micah Montas, and Ma. Nichole Nato from the Beach Volleyball Girls.
Going back to the courtesy call, the Rector and President gave the medalists special incentives – additional discounts on their matriculation and tuition fees.
Rev. Fr. Edwin also encouraged them to continue their athletic careers and aspire to be national athletes someday who will represent the Philippines in several international sporting events.
The top university official commended, too, the efforts of the coaches in producing athletes who showed all of their might in every game they had.
“Thank you very much for your efforts. You are the wind beneath their wings,” Fr. Lao said.
In the end, he reminded the Legazpi Thomasian medalists to continue their training on and off-season to produce better results and take home, hopefully, more medals.
