Immediately following the baccalaureate mass, UST-Legazpi, through the Office of Student Services, held the Honra Tomasino: Recognition Rites for the College of Health Sciences (CHS) graduating students on July 11, 2024, at the UST-Legazpi Dome. The ceremony, a celebration of academic excellence and perseverance, was formally opened by Rev. Fr. Edwin A. Lao, OP, MM, DBA, the University’s Rector and President. In his inspiring address, he urged the graduates to become not only skilled healthcare professionals but also compassionate leaders advocating for social justice and equitable access to healthcare.
The recognition rites highlighted the achievements of CHS awardees, who received honor alongside their proud parents. This event marked a significant milestone in their academic journey, recognizing their hard work and dedication.
One of the most touching moments in the ceremony was the heartfelt words of gratitude from Jay Raynald M. Almojuela, a BS Pharmacy student and recipient of the St. Thomas Aquinas Award for Outstanding Performance in Academics. Jay’s journey from the small island of Ticao, Masbate to UST-Legazpi is a testament to his resilience and determination.

Despite these obstacles, he persevered, often resorting to using expensive mobile data and seeking stable connections near cellular towers to complete his academic duties. His determination to succeed never wavered even during the most challenging times.
In his speech, Jay expressed profound gratitude to UST-Legazpi for the exceptional education and guidance he received over the past four years. He thanked dedicated faculty members, particularly Ma’am Shailer Balidoy and Ma’am Shanny Estera, for their mentorship and support. He also acknowledged the unwavering encouragement from his friends, classmates, and family, whose love and support were his pillars of strength.
Jay’s heartfelt tribute to his late father, Tatay Rey, who continues to inspire him, moved the audience. He concluded by offering thanks to Almighty God for the courage and determination that helped him overcome trials and uncertainties.
The ceremony concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Susana C. Cabredo, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the Dominican Blessing led by Rev. Fr. Junel C. Pedroso, OP, LPT, STHL/MA, Vice-President for Administration and Finance.
Rev. Fr. Edwin A. Lao expressed his pride in the awardees by initiating a photo opportunity with all the awardees and their parents, capturing the moment of achievement and joy.
The recognition rites at UST-Legazpi not only celebrated academic achievements but also underscored the importance of gratitude, resilience, and community support, marking a memorable and inspiring event for all attendees.
