Last August 14, 2023, UST-Legazpi’s research team formally met with representatives from the Bicol Consortium for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (BCAARRD) Program for a formal orientation meeting as well as a discussion of research proposals.
Held at the St. John Macias Pavillion Hall, the said event aims to help the region in moving the agricultural sector’s production, processes, and products further and beyond through collaborative research efforts.
The university was represented by Dr. Susana C. Cabredo, the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, together with the Office of Research, a team of support personnel, and faculty members from the different academic departments of the university.
On the other hand, BCAARRD was duly represented by Dr. Marissa N. Estrella, BCAARRD Director, and Dr. Lester M. Narvaez, BCAARRD Deputy Director. The two high-ranking officials discussed the overview and updates on the programs and projects of BCAARRD.
The aforementioned orientation is a process UST-Legazpi needs to undergo as BCAARRD’s newest Consortium Member Institution (CMI) which took effect on December 14, 2022.
In the afternoon, UST-Legazpi presented its two pre-approved studies for further critiquing before it acquired approval and funding.
The first proposed research is “Tubong Magayon: Geophysical Mapping and Supply Management of High-value Crops in Albay Province”, while the second study is “Policy Advocacy Towards the Influx of Fish Cages in Sula Channel, Sula, Bacacay, Albay”.
Both studies are spearheaded by Mr. Isagani B. Jacob, MST-Chemistry, Assistant Director of the Office of Research together with his team members coming from different departments of the university.
With this institutional commitment, UST-Legazpi is hopeful for BCAARRD’s technological and other relevant support for the benefit of the agricultural and fisheries community at large.
