SPA FACULTY WINS BEST RESEARCH CAPSULE AT CULTURAL RESEARCH 2023

UST-Legazpi landed one of the top spots that participated in the recently concluded Seminar-Workshop on Cultural Research last February 23 – 24, and March 3, 2023, participated by nine Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Bicol.

Among the representatives of UST-Legazpi are key people from the  Special Program in the Arts (SPA) Program of the Basic Education Department. Marie Veronique D. Berdin, MAEd, SPA Program Chair, led the said team with Jobert Landeza and Magno Rey Cordovilla, LPT.

Their study entitled “Monovlog: As Resiliency of the Bikol Theatre in the Time of Pandemic” landed as the Best Research Capsule in the Performance Category of the said event.

“Cultural research is not for everyone as artists may have varied levels of interest or expertise in this area,” said Berdin, the head of UST-Legazpi’s SPA Program. According to her, winning an award for cultural research can provide recognition and validation for the department’s efforts, encourage SPA teachers to do more research-based production, and generate positive publicity for the department’s work.

“This can also serve as a promotion for our department to encourage more artistically inclined students to enroll in the UST-Legazpi Junior High School Special Program in the Arts,” she added.

Asked as to where the said program is heading with this study, Berdin said that the future output of the research will produce a lesson exemplar that will provide future references for theater arts teachers which are seen to have several potential benefits for schools offering Special Program in the Arts.

“It can help to improve the quality of theater arts instruction in schools by providing teachers with effective teaching strategies and resources that have been researched and tested. This can result in improved student outcomes such as greater engagement, creativity, and skill development,” Berdin continued.

The lesson exemplar can be used as a model for other specializations (Dance, Music, and Visual Arts) while fostering a research-based practice culture within the department.

The said study is expected to encourage overall innovation and ongoing development in teaching and learning.

“It may also attract funding opportunities, further enhancing the department’s curriculum and instruction, and impact the field of art education.”
