When Jay Raynald Almojuela, a proud 2024 Magna Cum Laude graduate of UST-Legazpi’s BS Pharmacy program, saw his name at the pinnacle of the November 2024 Pharmacists Licensure Exam results, his initial reaction was one of disbelief.
Jay candidly shared, “At first, I was completely shocked when I found out that I topped the Pharmacist Licensure Exam… To be honest, I did not expect to see my name on the list of topnotchers because I was not confident about my performance during the exam.”
Hailing from San Jacinto, Masbate, Jay’s journey into the world of pharmacy was fueled by a passion for science and a desire to make a meaningful impact on healthcare.
“From a young age, I have always had a strong interest in science, particularly biology and chemistry,” he explained. Witnessing family members face health struggles further inspired him to pursue a medical course. “Ultimately, my passion for science and my desire to make a meaningful impact on other people’s health led me to choose pharmacy as my career path.”
For Jay, topping the licensure exam was a product of rigorous preparation and a solid support system. He credits his success to the knowledge and experiences he gained during college, his internship programs, and the guidance he received from his chosen review center.
“I also had a strong support system from my family, peers, and mentors who kept me motivated throughout my board exam preparation,” he added.
Jay’s study techniques were equally instrumental in his journey. He used active studying methods, such as flashcards and practice questions, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“I made my health a priority by ensuring that I got regular exercise, ate a balanced diet, and maintained 6 to 8 hours of sleep every day,” shared Jay.
UST-Legazpi: A Strong Foundation for Excellence
Reflecting on his four years at UST-Legazpi, Jay highlighted how his education prepared him for the challenges of the licensure exam.
“My college education equipped me with a strong foundation of knowledge in various pharmacy subjects, which played a huge role in helping me succeed and excel,” he said.
A key figure in Jay’s journey was one of his professors, Sir Henson Turalde. “Initially, my goal was simply to pass the board exam,” Jay admitted, but Mr. Turalde motivated him to aim higher, offering him support and encouragement just months before the exam.
“Knowing that someone like Sir Henson, who himself was a topnotcher, believed in my potential gave me the confidence and motivation to push beyond my limits.”
Jay also praised UST-Legazpi’s facilities for providing an optimal learning environment. “The classrooms, library, and laboratories, equipped with advanced tools and resources, greatly enriched my learning experience,” he said.
Like any aspiring professional, Jay faced challenges during his journey. As part of an online review program, staying disciplined was a significant hurdle.
“There were many times when I was tempted to procrastinate because of distractions like household chores, social media, and invitations to hang out,” he recalled.
However, by creating a distraction-free study space and sticking to a daily routine, he remained focused and productive.
Jay offers this advice to current UST-Legazpi Pharmacy students and aspiring pharmacists: “Study and work hard as if a patient’s life depends on it. The accuracy of dispensing medications and providing drug information is crucial for delivering safe and effective patient care.”
Looking ahead, Jay envisions giving back to his alma mater and inspiring the next generation. “I have been planning to work as a teacher in the Pharmacy Program at UST-Legazpi as a way of giving back,” he shared. “I hope to contribute to the training of the next generations of competent pharmacy graduates and, even future PhLE topnotchers in the Bicol Region.”
Jay Raynald Almojuela’s story shows how perseverance, passion, and the transformative education provided by UST-Legazpi brought him to the top. As he continues to aim for greater heights, his journey serves as an inspiration to all aspiring pharmacists and a point of pride for the Thomasian community.
