By the second quarter of 2024, heavy traffic condition along UST-Legazpi is expected to be decongested through a road dike project headed by the Department of Public Works and Highways – Bicol (DPWH), Albay 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO).
Last October 26, 2023, the university, represented by Prof. Susana C. Cabredo, Ed.D., Vice-President of UST-Legazpi attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Road Dike project along the university’s Rawis Campus. The 450-meter ongoing road dike construction project is situated beside UST-Legazpi along the Yawa River which costs more than 90 million pesos in the making. The 3.35-wide road includes solar lights, sidewalk, lay-by, wheel guard, and road/traffic signages that aim to “decongest traffic along Maharlika highway from Sto. Domingo – Camarines Sur Boundary Road which is an essential road going to and from the 1st District of Albay,” according to Virgilio C. Eduarte, CESO III, Regional Director of DPWH Bicol.
RD Eduarte also highlighted that the DPWH Bicol is concrete in saying that the said road project will serve as “the best alternative road going to the northern barangays of Legazpi City”.
“For the convenience of the public, the said road will connect the ongoing ‘Duterte Highway’, a road constructed for motorists going to Naga without passing the city proper of Legazpi. The said project will also connect to the future ‘Yawa Bridge 2’ and interconnect other road projects in Legazpi City,” the said official added.
On the other hand, Dr. Cabredo called this project “an act of kindness” stating that not only constituents of UST-Legazpi will benefit from this strategy but also everyone who is outside of the Legazpi Thomasian Community.
“We see a bright future. We cannot wait for the development of these projects in Albay and the region. Your vision really expands to the roots and crannies of the country,” the Vice-President said.
